Dylan Thomas died of problems related to his alcoholism. Other authors who have battled alcoholism include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Stephen King, Hunter S. Thompson, William Faulkner, Raymond Chandler, and Patricia Highsmith. Stephen King has talked at length about his battle with alcohol addiction. Hemingway and Thompson both committed suicide. Alcohol has an ugly face and it has blighted many lives.

What is an alcoholic?

The term is usually reserved for people that are dependent on alcohol. That means if they stop drinking they become unwell and they get withdrawal symptoms such as shakes and sickness. That’s delirium tremens, the ‘DTs’ and they can be fatal. It is reckoned about 9-10% of people in the UK and USA are dependent on alcohol. If you fall into that category, then you need specialist help.
